Disk to Disk function
If you are upgrading or downgrading your computer
hard drive to another one, the new hard drive has to be the same
interface as the old one, otherwise your system on the new hard disk
won't boot due to the change of hard drive interface.
Moreover, your target disk selected in step (2)
shown in the picture should contain ZERO partitions. Please go and
delete all the partition if any exist and restart PC Disk Clone.
Options contains "Used Only" which indicates PC
Disk Clone will only clone data blocks which contains real data, and
"Shadow Copy" which is used when cloning System drive in order to make
sure every system data are correctly cloned.
To start, first choose your source disk in step
(1), then choose destination disk in step (2). By default, you can leave
the options untouched. You might remove "Used Only" if you want to make
a bit to bit exact clone. Finally, click Start to start the task.
Partition to Partition function
Partition to Partition function is very similar
to Disk to Disk, except information being displayed. The steps are also
the same, you might refer to the Disk to Disk tips in above.
Disk to Image function
Creating hard drive image is the most commonly
used method to backup system and data. To start, first choose source
disk in step (1), then choose the folder where you want the image file
to be stored. Remember, This folder location cannot be within any
partitions in the source disk. If it does, your system will crash and
the backup will fail. The reason is because, you are trying to store the
image into the disk itself, when image size increases, disk data size
increases and the disk space will evenually full with no space at all.
This is dangerous and deserves you attention.
Then, create the subfolder as you wish, and
create the image file by clicking the "New PCHD File" button. You will
also need to make sure that the space the images stays is enough to hold
the disk data.
Finally, click Start and wait untill the progress goes to 100%.
Image to Disk function
Image to Disk is used when you are recovering
your system. The oporation is quite straight forward. First choose the
source imae (PCHD file), then choose the target hard disk. Finally,
click start.
Partition to Image function
Partition to Image function is to backup a
partition into PCPT image file. The operation is similar to back up an
entire disk.
Image to Partition function
Image to Partition is to recover a particular
partition from a PCPT image file. The operation is similar to recovering
an entire hard drive.
Trouble shooting
If you encounter problems of of booting Windows
Vista / 7 from your new hard drive and getting the error shown below.
There two ways to fix the error. One automatic but you will need a
Windows Installation which might not always true to everyone, the other
way is manual by using Windows PE Boot CD created by PC Win Boot.
Temporarily disconnect any other hard disks
except the new one. It's important and you are responsible for
disconnecting the right ones.
Option I (Automatic repair):
Put your Windows setup DVD or your System
Repair Disc in the drive and restart your PC. Assuming you've properly
configured your BIOS to boot from CDs/DVDs before hard drives (or you
can press F12 if your PC supports it to boot from the CD), you should
get a prompt asking you to "Press any key to boot from the CD/DVD..."
Press a key, and the CD will begin to load.
If you are using your Windows Installation CD, you'll see a dialog
asking you want to Install Now, or in the lower left corner, an option
to "Repair your Computer," which you'll want to click.
Select "Repair your computer" to continue.
On the next window, choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the repair on.
Click the Next button. Proceed with the process by choosing "Startup Repair" to fix the boot problem.
Option II (Manual Repair)
First, use your rescue cd which created
before using PC Win Boot. Set up the BIOS to boot from the CD. You
should get a prompt asking you to "Press any key to boot from the
CD/DVD...", press any key to continue, after all, you will see a screen
like below:
Next, close the PC Win Boot Menu window by clicking the [x] on the right. you will see a command line window.
We are assuming that your Windows 7
installation is by using its default setting which has a small active
100MB primary partition containing all the boot files and a partition
which contains all your C drive data (as shown in the first picture
below).
Before typing commands shown below, run "diskpart" first.
Now type the command as shown in below, step by step:
- "select disk 0"
- "list partition"
- "select partition 1"
- "detail partition": In the output, you will see that this partition is an active partition, which means system are booting from this partition.
- "remove letter=C": this partition is a hidden partition and it shouldn't be assigned to any drive letter.
- "select partition 2": This partition should be your original C drive. To verify that, you can exit diskpart for a second and type "D:" and "dir" to see if there are folders like "Windows", "Program Files" etc. Now go back to diskpart, type "selection disk 0", "selection partition 2";
- "detail partition": You should notice the drive letter "D" in the output;
- "remove letter=D"
- "assign letter=C": correct the system partition to its right letter.
- "select disk 0"
- "uniqueid disk id=C3E8A9B1": The string "C3E8A9B1" is a random hexadecimal form 4 bytes number. You can assign any valid hexical 4 bytes number as you wish. But please remember the length of the string is exactly 8.
- "exit"
- "bcdboot C:\Windows": Now you have successfully fix the boot manager error.
- Reboot your computer and take out the Recovery CD. You should be able to boot from the new hard drive successfully.
